A 1-year-old Syrian hamster is about 40 in human years, a winter white or Campbell's about 48
There is no official chart for converting a hamster's age to human years. The Merck Veterinary Manual, the RSPCA and the Japanese Ministry of the Environment give lifespans but no conversion chart, and the popular "2 years = 70" tables online do not say how they were made. So this calculator takes the points in a hamster's life that can be checked against sources, matches them to the same moments in a human life, and joins them with straight lines to estimate human age. The middle of the 7–8 weeks at which hamsters can become pregnant, 7.5 weeks (Merck), is matched to human puberty (mean age at menarche in the United States, 12.5 years). The middle of each species' average lifespan range (Merck) is matched to human life expectancy (US life expectancy at birth in 2024, 79.0 years). The recorded maximum lifespan (AnAge database) is matched to the human longevity record of 122 years 164 days.
Lifespan differs by almost a factor of two between species, so the same age means very different human ages. At 1 year, a Syrian hamster is about 40, a winter white or Campbell's about 48, a Chinese hamster about 37 and a Roborovski about 29. In the calculator above, pick a species and enter an age or a date to see the human age, the life stage and the time left until the average lifespan range. The species list also shows the human age of the other species at the same age. One turn of the wheel is 5 years (6 years past 4 years 6 months): the time already lived fills in behind (to the left of) the hamster in stage colors, and dragging the wheel shows any other age at once.
When and why convert to human years
A hamster's time runs much faster than ours. By this calculator, one day of an adult Syrian hamster corresponds to about 32 human days, and one day of a winter white or Campbell's to about 41. A single week can be several human months, so converting the number to human years makes it easier to judge moments that are easy to miss, such as these.
- You want to know what stage a hamster from a pet shop is in: a hamster weaned and brought home at about 4 weeks is roughly 7 in human years and will be able to breed within a few weeks. Merck says to separate males and females before 8 weeks, so if you bought more than one, it will soon be time to split them.
- You are thinking about breeding: Merck gives the best age for breeding as about 10 weeks to 15 months and adds that breeding is best left to experienced people. A 15-month Syrian hamster is about 47 in human years.
- You are changing care for an older hamster: a Syrian hamster reaches about 61 in human years at 1 year 8 months, and a winter white or Campbell's about 62 at 1 year 4 months. Merck says older Syrian hamsters can develop blood clots in the heart (atrial thrombosis), so this is a good point to watch breathing, appetite and weight more often.
- You are raising a hamster with a child and preparing for the goodbye: in the VetCompass study of UK veterinary records, the median age at death was 1.75 years. Knowing that a hamster's day is about a human month can help explain a short lifespan to a child.
How it is calculated
- Anchor points: the calculator plots birth (0, 0), (7.5 weeks, human 12.5), (middle of the species' average lifespan range, human 79.0) and (the species' maximum lifespan, human 122 years 164 days). The average lifespans are those in the Merck pet-owner table: Syrian 18–36 months, Russian dwarf 18–24 months, Roborovski 36–48 months and Chinese 24–36 months, with middles of 27, 21, 42 and 30 months.
- Sexual maturity is 7.5 weeks for every species: the Merck professional edition says Syrian hamsters can breed at 7–8 weeks, and the pet-owner edition says to separate males and females before 8 weeks without naming a species. AnAge also lists values such as 120 days for the winter white and 243 days for the Roborovski, but it notes itself that reports for the Roborovski conflict (breeding possible at 2–3 weeks), so one value is used for all species.
- Points are joined with straight lines: between 7.5 weeks and the middle of the lifespan range, human age = 12.5 + (hamster months − 1.725) ÷ (middle − 1.725) × (79.0 − 12.5). 7.5 weeks is 1.725 months (52.5 days ÷ 30.44 days, the mean month length). For a 1-year (12-month) Syrian hamster: 12.5 + 10.275 ÷ 25.275 × 66.5 = 39.5, which rounds to 40.
- Maximum lifespan: AnAge's maximum captive lifespans of 3.9 years for the Syrian, 3.9 years for the winter white and 4.8 years for the Roborovski are matched to 122 years 164 days. Campbell's has no AnAge entry, so the winter white value is used for both, and the Chinese hamster has no entry either, so the slope of the earlier segment is simply extended. If the human age goes beyond 122 years 164 days, the calculator shows "Over 122" instead of a number, and it calculates up to 5 years 11 months.
- Life stages: baby (birth to 4 weeks), young (4–10 weeks), adult (10 weeks until the senior stage), senior (from 75% of the middle of the average lifespan range, rounded to whole months, to the end of the range) and long-lived (after the end of the range). 4 weeks is the end of the 21–28 day weaning period, and 10 weeks is the start of the age Merck gives as best for breeding. No veterinary standard for senior hamsters was found, so the calculator borrows the rule the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) uses for dogs, that the last 25% of expected lifespan is the senior stage. With this rule the senior stage starts at human age 61–63 in all four species.
- If you enter a birthday or adoption date: the calculator counts whole months up to today and adds the fraction of the current month that has passed, and it judges the 4-week and 10-week boundaries by days (28 and 70). With an adoption date, it subtracts the age at adoption (weeks as 7 days each, months by the same calendar date) from the adoption date to get an estimated birthday; if left blank, it counts 4 weeks, the end of weaning.
"Aging pace" is how many human days one hamster day equals in the segment the hamster is in. Because the anchor points are joined by straight lines, it is constant within a segment and changes at 7.5 weeks and at the middle of the average lifespan range.

Bold values are the age at which the species enters the senior stage, and italic values are the long-lived stage, past the average lifespan range. The first 7.5 weeks divide the span from birth to puberty evenly, so the four species are the same; after that, species with shorter average lifespans age faster.
How long hamsters live: lifespan differs by species
| Species | Average lifespan (Merck) | Senior stage starts | Maximum lifespan (AnAge, captive) | Weight (Merck) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Syrian (golden hamster) | 18–36 months | 1 year 8 months (human about 61) | 3.9 years | 110–140 g |
| Winter white · Campbell's (Russian dwarf) | 18–24 months | 1 year 4 months (human about 62) | 3.9 years (winter white) | 35–50 g |
| Roborovski | 36–48 months | 2 years 8 months (human about 62) | 4.8 years | 20–30 g |
| Chinese | 24–36 months | 1 year 11 months (human about 63) | No data | 40–60 g |
Merck says pet hamsters live 18 months to 3 years overall. In its species table, the Roborovski is longest at 36–48 months and the Russian dwarf (winter white and Campbell's) shortest at 18–24 months. Other sources give shorter figures: the RSPCA says hamsters usually live up to 2 years, and the Japanese Ministry of the Environment gives 2–3 years for hamsters as a group.
Actual clinic records are shorter still. In the VetCompass study of UK veterinary records (O'Neill et al. 2022), the median age at death among 1,055 hamsters whose age at death was recorded was 1.75 years, with no clear difference between Syrian hamsters (1.76 years) and other species (1.68 years). Males (2.00 years) lived longer than females (1.67 years), and the oldest hamster in the records lived 3.65 years. The average lifespan range describes well-cared-for hamsters, while the clinic median includes hamsters that died early from illness or accidents, which is why the two differ.
What to look for at each life stage
- Baby (birth to 4 weeks): newborn pups are hairless, with eyes and ears closed, but their incisors are already in. They can be handled gently from about day 7 and eat softened food from about day 10, and they are weaned at 21–28 days. Leave the mother and pups undisturbed for at least 7 days after birth, because a stressed mother may abandon or eat her pups (Merck).
- Young (4–10 weeks): hamsters can become pregnant very young, so males and females are separated before 8 weeks (Merck). Syrian and Chinese hamsters do not live in groups and are kept one per cage, while dwarf species can live together if conditions are right (RSPCA). In Syrian hamsters at 3–10 weeks, proliferative ileitis is the most serious intestinal disease, and the diarrhea wets the fur around the tail (Merck). In UK clinic records, "wet tail", meaning soiling around the tail from any cause, was the most common reason for a vet visit at all ages (7.3%, VetCompass).
- Adult (10 weeks until the senior stage): the best age for breeding is about 10 weeks to 15 months (Merck). Keep the room at 18–26 °C; below 5 °C hamsters often hibernate, and Syrian hamsters do not fatten beforehand, so they starve if they do not wake to eat (Merck). Overgrown claws and incisors are also common (4.1% and 4.0% of UK clinic records), and inherited polycystic disease is common after 1 year of age, but liver cysts in Syrian hamsters usually cause no signs (Merck).
- Senior (from 75% of the middle of the average lifespan range to the end of the range): amyloidosis is more common in hamsters over 1 year old and in females, but it is infrequently reported in pet Syrian hamsters; it shows as loss of appetite, a rough coat and a hunched posture. Older Syrian hamsters can develop blood clots in the heart (atrial thrombosis), so see a vet at once for fast breathing, an irregular heartbeat or blue gums (Merck). In UK clinic records, the common causes of death were soiling around the tail ("wet tail", 7.9%), abdominal masses (6.4%) and tumors (5.4%).
- Long-lived (after the average lifespan range): past 3 years for the Syrian, 2 years for the winter white and Campbell's, 4 years for the Roborovski and 3 years for the Chinese hamster. In human terms that is 84–99 or more, and the maximum captive lifespans recorded by AnAge are 3.9 years for the Syrian, 3.9 years for the winter white and 4.8 years for the Roborovski.
Common mistakes
- Multiplying by a fixed number such as "1 year = 30–40 human years": a hamster passes human puberty within the first two months and then ages slowly, so one multiplier gives too little when young and too much when old. The popular "2 years = 70, 3 years = 100" table gives one answer for all hamsters and does not cite a source.
- Mixing up species: at the same 2 years, a Roborovski is about 49 in human years and an adult, while a winter white or Campbell's is about 84 and long-lived. If you do not know the species, compare all four values in the species list and use the weights in the Merck table (Syrian 110–140 g, dwarf species 20–60 g) to judge which one it is.
- Entering the adoption date as the birthday: if the hamster was already several weeks old when you bought it, add that time. If you do not know the birthday, choose "By adoption date" and enter the age the seller gave you. If left blank, the calculator counts 4 weeks, the end of weaning.
- Treating the Guinness 4.5 years as a Syrian hamster record: the Guinness World Records "oldest hamster in captivity ever" lived 4.5 years (UK), but its species and year are not stated. AnAge says anecdotal reports of Syrian hamsters living longer "seem unlikely but not impossible" and gives a maximum of 3.9 years.
- Treating hibernation as natural rest: hamsters often hibernate below 5 °C, but Syrian hamsters do not fatten beforehand and starve if they do not wake to eat (Merck). It is safer to keep the room at 18–26 °C.
Limits and cautions
- No study directly comparing hamster and human aging was found. These values are estimates from straight lines between anchor points, and the actual health of an individual hamster varies.
- The average lifespan uses the middle of the range in the Merck pet-owner table. If you used the RSPCA figure (up to 2 years) or the clinic median (1.75 years) instead, the same age would give a higher human age.
- The Merck table lists winter white and Campbell's hamsters together as "Russian dwarf", so the two species are not separated here. The maximum lifespan also uses the winter white record.
- The human anchors use US statistics (life expectancy at birth 79.0 years, mean age at menarche 12.5 years). The menarche figure comes from a survey of women aged 15–44 (National Survey of Family Growth 2013–2017) and is used only as a rough marker of puberty.
- The start of the senior stage is a rule borrowed from AAHA's guidelines for dogs, not a veterinary standard for hamsters, and a result from an adoption date is an estimate that assumes the age at adoption is correct.
- If you are worried about your hamster's health, see a veterinarian who treats exotic pets before relying on the result. Your input is calculated only in this browser and is not sent to a server.

Frequently asked questions
How old is a 1-year-old hamster in human years?
By this calculator, a Syrian hamster is about 40, a winter white or Campbell's about 48, a Chinese hamster about 37 and a Roborovski about 29. With no official conversion chart, 7.5 weeks, when hamsters can become pregnant (Merck Veterinary Manual), is matched to human puberty at 12.5 years, and the middle of each species' average lifespan range to US life expectancy of 79.0 years, joined by straight lines. The shorter the species' lifespan, the higher the human age at the same age.
How old is a 2-year-old hamster in human years?
A Syrian hamster is about 71 (senior), a winter white or Campbell's about 84 (long-lived), a Chinese hamster about 65 (senior) and a Roborovski about 49 (adult). For the winter white and Campbell's, 2 years is the end of the 18–24 month average lifespan given by Merck.
How long do hamsters live?
The Merck Veterinary Manual says pet hamsters live 18 months to 3 years overall: Syrian 18–36 months, winter white and Campbell's (Russian dwarf) 18–24 months, Chinese 24–36 months and Roborovski 36–48 months. In the VetCompass study of UK veterinary records, the median age at death among 1,055 hamsters whose age at death was recorded was 1.75 years.
Which species lives longest?
By the sources, the Roborovski. Its average lifespan in the Merck table is longest at 36–48 months, and its AnAge maximum captive lifespan of 4.8 years is longer than the 3.9 years of the Syrian and the winter white. In UK clinic records, however, the median age at death of Syrian hamsters (1.76 years) and other species (1.68 years) did not clearly differ.
How old is a 1-month or 2-month-old hamster in human years?
A 1-month-old is about 7 and a 2-month-old about 13 in human years, the same for all four species after rounding. Hamsters can become pregnant at 7–8 weeks (Merck), so 2 months is just past human puberty, and Merck says to separate males and females before 8 weeks.
When does a hamster become a senior?
No veterinary standard defines senior hamsters, so this calculator counts the senior stage from 75% of the middle of the average lifespan range, rounded to whole months, borrowing the rule the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) uses for dogs, that the last 25% of expected lifespan is senior. That is 1 year 8 months for the Syrian, 1 year 4 months for the winter white and Campbell's, 1 year 11 months for the Chinese hamster and 2 years 8 months for the Roborovski, all at human age 61–63.
Can I just multiply by a number, like 1 hamster year = 30–40 human years?
A single multiplier does not match a hamster's real life. A hamster passes human puberty within the first two months and then ages slowly, so multiplying gives too little when young and too much when old. Lifespan also differs by almost a factor of two between species, which one multiplier cannot reflect.
What if I don't know the birthday?
Choose "By adoption date" and enter the adoption date and the age at that time (in weeks or months), and the calculator works out an estimated birthday. If you leave the age at adoption blank, it counts 4 weeks, the end of weaning (21–28 days according to Merck).
