A full redesign of the site is in the works

We're rebuilding the whole site around a three-column layout: the tool menu on the left, the tool you're using in the middle, and its table of contents on the right. Tools and URLs stay the same, and only one ad appears on the first screen.

What changes

The screen is split into three columns. The left menu holds the 22 categories, your favorites and search, so you can jump straight to another tool. The middle holds the tool you're using and its explanation. The right column follows along with the tool's table of contents and related tools.

Results move up front. On a phone, the result appears before the input fields, and the steps of the calculation are listed in rows under the big number. The body text is divided into numbered sections, and tables and sources follow the same rules.

Ads sit in one horizontal slot above the tool and one below, plus one more in the right column on desktop. Only one ad is visible when the page first opens, and none are placed inside the input fields or the results. The About, Contact, News and Privacy Policy pages carry no ads.

What stays the same

The tools' formulas and URLs do not change. Bookmarked pages and search results still open as before. The current look also stays: a paper-colored background, brown lines and a single accent color.

The principles stay too: use everything without signing up or installing anything, and never send your inputs to a server.

When it rolls out

Right now we're building and checking it locally. The plan is to roll it out starting with the home page, and we'll post here again on the day it actually changes. If you spot an awkward screen or a broken feature after the switch, let us know through the contact page along with the page URL.

Have something to add about this post?

Broken screens, problems that remain, or things you'd like to know more about: send them through the contact page. If anything changes after the date in this post, we'll write about it in News again.
