Parent-Child Age Difference Calculator

Enter a parent's and a child's dates of birth to see the age gap and how old the parent was on the day the child was born. For a parent born March 20, 1990 and a child born June 15, 2021, the gap is 31 years, 2 months and 26 days. The parent is 35 when the child can start pre-K in September 2025, 36 at kindergarten in September 2026 and 49 when the child turns 18. Choose United States or England to switch the school years and legal ages. Drag the age timeline or type an age to see how old the parent is when the child is a certain age, or how old the child is when the parent turns 62, 65 or 67. Add up to three children to compare sibling spacing and grade gaps with the common September 1 kindergarten cutoff, or enter a due date to look ahead. The dates you enter are not saved.

School start assumes the most common U.S. rule: a child who turns 5 by September 1 starts kindergarten that fall. Pre-K is shown as the year before kindergarten, but it is optional; state-funded programs are offered in most states and the District of Columbia, and ages, eligibility and cost vary. Cutoffs differ by state and some districts, so check your own school. A child who starts a year early or a year late shifts every school milestone by one year. Click a milestone name to move "How old at that point?" to that day.

The age gap is how old the parent was on the day the child was born

A parent born on March 20, 1990 and a child born on June 15, 2021 are 31 years, 2 months and 26 days apart, which is 11,410 days. Put another way, the parent was 31 years, 2 months and 26 days old when the child arrived. The calculator above builds on that gap and lines up the two ages at every later milestone: the child starts kindergarten in September 2026 when the parent is 36, and turns 18 on June 15, 2039 when the parent is 49.

Drag the age timeline or type an age into "How old at that point?" to see how old the parent is when the child is a given age, or how old the child is when the parent reaches 62 or 67. Add up to three children to compare sibling spacing and grade gaps, or enter a due date to look ahead before the baby is born. If you only need one person's age in completed years, the age calculator is simpler.

When to look at a parent's and a child's ages together

        • Deciding when to have a child: you can see how old you will be when your child starts school, turns 18 or finishes college. The CDC reports that the mean age of mothers at first birth reached a record 27.6 years in 2024. A parent who is 28 at the birth is 46 when the child turns 18 and 49 when the child turns 21.
        • Planning around school and adulthood: pre-K (optional), kindergarten, middle school, high school and the 18th birthday each land in a particular year, and the parent's age that year affects work and money plans. To work out a graduation year for a given birthday and state, use the school year calculator.
        • Thinking about retirement: the Social Security Administration says you can start retirement benefits as early as age 62, and the full retirement age is 67 for people born in 1960 or later. Medicare is health insurance for people 65 or older who meet citizenship or residency requirements. If the parent was 30 at the birth, the child is 31 when the parent turns 62 and 36 when the parent turns 67.
        • Comparing sibling spacing: when you are weighing a second or third child, or checking how many grades apart two siblings will be, you can see the real time between birth dates and the grade gap side by side.

        How the calculation works

        1. Age gap: count the years, months and days from the parent's date of birth to the child's. This equals the parent's age in completed years, months and days on the day the child was born. The gap in days is simply the difference between the two dates.
        2. Age on any date: a person's age is the number of birthdays that have passed. The calculator moves a February 29 birthday to March 1 in years that are not leap years. A child under one is shown in months.
        3. How the two ages relate: on the child's nth birthday the parent is exactly (years of age gap + n). On the parent's nth birthday the child is (n − years of age gap − 1), unless the two birthdays fall on the same month and day, in which case the 1 is not subtracted.
        4. School milestones: most states let a child start kindergarten if the child turns 5 by a cutoff date, and September 1 is the most common one. This calculator uses September 1: a child who turns 5 on or before September 1 starts kindergarten that fall, a child who turns 5 later starts the next year. Pre-K is shown one year earlier, in the fall before kindergarten, as an optional step. It then adds one year for 1st grade, six for 6th grade (middle school), nine for 9th grade (high school) and 13 for the end of 12th grade in June. Some districts group grades differently, so treat 6th and 9th grade as typical starting points. With the England button the calculator instead uses Reception (age 4 by August 31), Year 1, Year 7 and the end of Year 11.
        5. The day the parent is N times as old: the first day on which the parent's age in days is no more than N times the child's age in days. Take the child's birthday and add the gap in days divided by (N − 1), rounded up. Twice as old happens when the child has lived as many days as the age gap.

On October 18, 2026 the parent is 36 and the child is 5. Press "Example" in the calculator above to see the same numbers on the timeline and in the table. Pre-K is not required: the National Institute for Early Education Research counts state-funded preschool programs in 44 states and the District of Columbia for 2024-25, enrolling 37 percent of 4-year-olds nationwide, so availability and eligibility depend on where you live.

England: the same example with English school years

The country buttons above the calculator switch between the United States and England. A browser set to British English opens on England first. In England, GOV.UK says most children start Reception full-time in the September after their fourth birthday, so a child who turns 4 on or before August 31 starts that September. Legally, a child must start full-time education at compulsory school age, which is 31 December, 31 March or 31 August following the fifth birthday, whichever comes first, and parents can ask to defer entry to Year 1 (the school does not have to agree to Reception). Year 7 is the first year of Key Stage 3, and Year 11 is the year most children take GCSEs.

After Year 11 the rules differ from U.S. high school: a young person can leave school on the last Friday in June if they will be 16 by the end of the summer holidays, but must then stay in full-time education, start an apprenticeship, or work or volunteer 20 or more hours a week while in part-time education or training until age 18. GOV.UK says most people can start learning to drive at 17. For the parent, the State Pension age is 68 for people born after 5 April 1978; people born earlier reach it at 66 or 67 depending on their birth date. The government says the timetable for the rise from 67 to 68 could change after a future review. The same parents and child, with the England button chosen, give this table (Scotland and Northern Ireland have separate school rules).

Parent is twice as oldSeptember 10, 20523162
        Parent turns 68March 20, 20583668

With England's cutoff, a child born August 31, 2020 and one born September 1, 2020 are one day apart but one school year apart, because only the first turns 4 by August 31, 2024.

Why the gap can look like 31 years or 32 years

In the example the true gap never changes: 31 years, 2 months and 26 days. But if you subtract completed ages, you get 32 from March 20 to June 14 each year and 31 for the rest of the year. The parent has their birthday on March 20, while the child has to wait until June 15. In 2026 that works out as parent 35 and child 4 on March 19 (a gap of 31), parent 36 and child 4 on March 20 (a gap of 32), and parent 36 and child 5 on June 15 (a gap of 31 again).

If the parent's birthday comes later in the year than the child's, the stretch crosses New Year. A parent born September 1 and a child born March 1 are one year further apart from September 1 until the end of February. Subtracting birth years (2021 − 1990 = 31) is a third way to answer "how many years apart?" and it gives the same number all year, so it matches the completed-age gap only part of the time. Below the result, the calculator tells you when the next stretch of the wider gap begins.

Key moments by the parent's age at the birth

If you know the parent's age in completed years at the birth (the years of the age gap), the ages at these moments are fixed. The columns about the child's birthdays always hold. The last two columns show the child's age on the parent's 62nd and 67th birthdays when the two birthdays are on different dates; if the month and day are the same, add 1.

        Age 38Parent 43Parent 56Parent 592328
        Age 40Parent 45Parent 58Parent 612126

For example, a parent who is 33 at the birth is 51 when the child turns 18, and the child is 28 on the parent's 62nd birthday. A child who turns 5 by the cutoff starts kindergarten that fall, so the parent's age on the first day of school is the "Child turns 5" value or one year more, depending on whether the parent's birthday falls between the child's birthday and the start of school. Check the exact value in the "Starts kindergarten" row of the calculator's table.

        Sibling spacing and grade gaps

With two or more children, the calculator shows the spacing between each neighboring pair. A first child born September 3, 2019 and a second born April 28, 2022 are 2 years, 7 months and 25 days apart, which is 968 days or 31 months, and the older child was 2 when the younger was born. With a September 1 cutoff, the first child turns 5 two days too late for the 2024 school year and starts kindergarten in 2025, while the second turns 5 in April 2027 and starts that fall. They are two grades apart even though the spacing is nearly two years and eight months.

        Dates of birthSpacingGrades apartWhy

The second row shows how one day changes a grade: the cutoff is a date, not a calendar year, and it is set by each state (a few leave it to districts), so your own state or district may differ from September 1. The World Health Organization's report of a technical consultation on birth spacing (WHO/RHR/07.1) says: "After a live birth, the recommended interval before attempting the next pregnancy is at least 24 months in order to reduce the risk of adverse maternal, perinatal and infant outcomes." That is a recommendation about health risk; this calculator only measures spacing and makes no health judgment. Talk to a health care provider about timing a pregnancy.

The day the parent is 2, 3 or 4 times as old as the child

The age gap stays the same while both people get older, so the parent's age divided by the child's age keeps shrinking. When the child is young the ratio is large, and it reaches exactly 2 when the child has lived as long as the gap. This is the same idea as the classic puzzle about the year a father is twice his son's age. The calculator finds the first day on which the parent's days lived are 4, 3 and 2 times the child's and marks them with diamonds on the timeline.

RatioChild has livedDate (example)Ages that day
        4 timesone third of the gapNovember 14, 2031Child 10 · Parent 41

        2 timesas long as the gapSeptember 10, 2052Child 31 · Parent 62

Ages in whole years do not always divide evenly (on the 4 times day, 41 ÷ 10 = 4.1). In days, the day before the parent has lived 15,213 days and the child 3,803 days, which is still slightly more than 4 times. On the day itself it is 15,214 and 3,804, and the ratio drops below 4 for the first time.

        Common mistakes

        • Mixing birth-year differences and completed-age differences: the difference in birth years is fixed, while the difference in completed ages can be one year larger for part of each year. Decide which one you mean before comparing numbers.
        • Guessing the grade gap from the spacing: grade depends on the kindergarten cutoff, not on elapsed time. Siblings born 358 days apart can be one grade apart, and siblings born one day apart can be one grade apart too, as in the table above.
        • Assuming September 1 everywhere: it is the most common cutoff in the NCES table, but the table lists dates from July 31 to January 1, and some states leave it to districts.
        • Treating 18 and 21 as the same kind of age: according to Cornell's Legal Information Institute, most states set the age of majority at 18, although Alabama and Nebraska set 19 and Mississippi sets 21. The drinking age is a separate matter: 23 U.S.C. § 158 directs the Secretary to withhold 10 percent of an amount otherwise apportioned to a state in years when a person under 21 can lawfully buy or publicly possess alcohol there.
        • Mixing up 62, 65 and 67: Social Security retirement benefits can start at 62, Medicare eligibility generally starts at 65, and full retirement age for someone born in 1960 or later is 67. These are three different thresholds.

What this calculator does not do

        • School milestones assume a September 1 cutoff, kindergarten at 5 (optional pre-K at 4; England: Reception for children who turn 4 by August 31), no repeated or skipped grades and 13 years from kindergarten to graduation. Early entry, red-shirting, transitional programs and different grade groupings are not reflected, and the calculator does not look up your state.
        • College, military service, work start dates and other personal milestones are left out. Use the age timeline or "How old at that point?" for any year you care about.
        • Only one parent can be entered at a time. To compare two parents, change the parent field and calculate twice.
        • Dates of birth run from January 1, 1900 to December 31, 2100 in the Gregorian calendar.
        • The dates of birth you enter are not saved to the web address or to your device. Use "Copy result" to keep a record.

As of The laws, agency pages and statistics cited here were checked on October 18, 2026, and the examples and tables were calculated the same day. The NCES cutoff table is based on 2018 data, so confirm your state's current rule with your school district.

        Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate the age gap between a parent and a child?

The parent's age on the day the child was born is the age gap. Count the years, months and days from the parent's date of birth to the child's. For a parent born March 20, 1990 and a child born June 15, 2021, that is 31 years, 2 months and 26 days, or 11,410 days.

Why does the gap in ages change during the year?

The two birthdays fall on different dates. For the stretch between the parent's birthday and the child's birthday, only the parent has aged, so the gap in completed years is one larger. With a parent born March 20 and a child born June 15, the gap is 32 from March 20 to June 14 each year and 31 the rest of the year. The actual gap of 31 years, 2 months and 26 days never changes.

How old is the parent when the child starts kindergarten?

The calculator assumes the most common U.S. rule, a child who turns 5 by September 1 starts kindergarten that fall. NCES lists September 1 as the most common state cutoff, but states and districts differ, so check yours. A child born June 15, 2021 starts in fall 2026, when a parent born March 20, 1990 is 36. Optional pre-K a year earlier, in fall 2025, puts the parent at 35.

How old is the child when the parent turns 62, 65 or 67?

On the parent's nth birthday the child is (n minus the years of the age gap minus 1), or one more if both birthdays are on the same day. With a gap of 31 years, the child is 30 when the parent turns 62, 33 at 65 and 35 at 67. Social Security retirement benefits can start at 62, Medicare is for people 65 or older who meet the requirements, and the full retirement age is 67 for people born in 1960 or later.

Does the calculator work for England, and what changes?

Yes. Choose England above the calculator. GOV.UK says most children start Reception in the September after their fourth birthday, and young people must stay in education or training until 18. The table then shows Reception, Year 1, Year 7 and the end of Year 11, the child at 16, 17 and 18, and the parent at 68, the State Pension age for people born after 5 April 1978. For the example, Reception starts in September 2025 when the parent is 35.

What is the difference between sibling spacing and grade gap?

Spacing is the real time between two birth dates. The grade gap depends on the kindergarten cutoff. With a September 1 cutoff, a child born September 1, 2020 and one born September 2, 2020 are one day apart but one grade apart. Siblings born January 5 and December 28, 2020 are 358 days apart and also one grade apart.

Which ages does the milestone table show, 18 or 21?

It shows both for the child. According to Cornell's Legal Information Institute, most states set the age of majority at 18, though Alabama and Nebraska use 19 and Mississippi uses 21. A separate federal law, 23 U.S.C. 158, directs the Secretary to withhold 10 percent of an amount otherwise apportioned to a state in years when a person under 21 can lawfully buy or publicly possess alcohol there.

Can I use a due date, and are the dates saved?

Yes. The child field accepts a future date, so you can enter a due date and see how old the parent will be at kindergarten, at 18 and at 21. The dates you enter are not saved to the web address or to your device and are not sent to a server, so use Copy result to keep a record.
