How to read your swimming calories
This swimming calorie calculator takes your weight, stroke, swim time, and intensity and turns them into an estimated calorie burn. The same 30 minutes in the pool can burn very different amounts depending on stroke and effort, so it helps to decide up front which stroke your workout actually matched and how much rest time to leave out before you enter a number.
The calories shown are estimated by multiplying each stroke's MET (metabolic equivalent of task) by your body weight and swim time. Actual burn depends on technique, rest breaks, water resistance, kick usage, and overall condition, so use this as a training-log reference rather than a fixed number for meal planning or a weight-loss target.

- Enter your weight in pounds. The tool accepts 66–440 lb; a higher body weight burns more calories at the same MET and time.
- Pick a stroke. Choose freestyle (moderate or vigorous), backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, sidestroke, leisurely swimming, or treading water — whichever matches your actual effort.
- Split your time into hours and minutes. Short sessions like 0h 15min work fine too.
- Check intensity (80–140%) and pool length or target calories. Intensity multiplies the result; pool length and target are only used to estimate laps and time-to-goal.

- Stroke: each option carries its own MET — freestyle (moderate) 5.8, freestyle (vigorous) 9.8, backstroke 9.5, breaststroke 10.3, butterfly 13.8, sidestroke 7.0, leisurely swimming 6.0, treading water 3.5.
- Time and intensity: time sets the total workload, and intensity multiplies that result by 80, 100, 120, or 140%.
- Pool length and target calories: pool length converts distance into an estimated lap count; target calories is used to back-calculate how many minutes are needed at your current burn rate.
The formula is MET × weight × time, adjusted for intensity
A MET treats resting energy use as 1 and shows how many times that rate a given activity burns. This tool multiplies the selected stroke's MET by your weight and time, applies a 1.05 swimming activity factor, and then scales the result by your chosen intensity.

Worked example: 154 lb, freestyle (moderate), 30 minutes

That comes from multiplying 5.8 MET by roughly 69.9 kg and 0.5 hours, then applying the 1.05 swimming factor. At this pace that session works out to about 7.1 kcal per minute, an estimated 0.47 mi (about 33 laps of a 25 yd pool), roughly 32.0 g of carbs, and roughly 9.5 g of fat.

- Instruction time, wall breaks, and time waiting for a lane are not the same as time actually swimming. For a conservative estimate, log only the minutes you were moving.
- High-MET strokes like butterfly and hard interval sets produce a large number even for short sessions. If your actual effort was lower, drop the intensity setting.
- Estimated distance and laps come from typical per-stroke pace assumptions and your pool length. If your watch or pool log disagrees, trust the device.
- Carb and fat burn are a simple split of total calories, not a measured value — talk to a professional before using them for diet or weight decisions.
Log the full context, not just the number
Writing down just "213 kcal" doesn't tell you which stroke, how long, or how hard the session was. Logging "154 lb, freestyle moderate, 30 min, 100% intensity" instead makes it easy to compare against your next workout.

What does MET mean in a swimming calorie calculation?

What's the difference between freestyle (moderate) and freestyle (vigorous)?
The two options use different MET values on screen. Freestyle (moderate) is calculated at 5.8 MET and freestyle (vigorous) at 9.8 MET, so at the same weight and time, vigorous freestyle produces a noticeably higher calorie estimate.
Should I include rest time in my swim time?
For a conservative estimate, enter only the minutes you were actually swimming. If your total pool time includes long rests, instruction, or waiting for a lane, entering the full session will overstate your actual burn.
How should I read the time needed for my target calories?
It back-calculates how many minutes it would take to reach your target at the per-minute burn rate implied by your current weight, stroke, and intensity. If your pace slows or you rest more, the actual time needed will be longer.
Are the estimated distance, laps, carbs, and fat accurate records?
No. Distance and laps are simple estimates based on typical per-stroke pace and your pool length, and carb/fat burn is a simple split of total calories by macronutrient energy value. Your actual numbers depend on stroke style, rest, kicking, and how your device measures the swim.
