Reading command through BB/9

A raw walk total settles nothing. Forty walks from a starter and twenty from a reliever cannot be ranked until you know how long each of them pitched. BB/9 exists to remove that difference: it restates every pitcher's walk total as though they had all thrown exactly nine innings.

The number on its own still does not say whether the command is good. Leagues sit at different baselines, and the gap between them is larger than most people expect. What follows explains how the value is built, why the league baselines diverge, and how to use each figure on screen when you are actually judging a pitcher.

Why nine is the multiplier

BB/9 multiplies walks by nine and divides by innings pitched. Nine is the length of a regulation game, and that single step puts a 30-inning reliever and a 180-inning starter on one axis. Walks per inning would be technically equivalent but lands on values like 0.37 that nobody has a feel for; multiplying by nine produces a number you can picture as one game's worth of free passes.

The rule that innings are counted in outs

Three outs make an inning, so a line of 7.1 in a box score is seven innings and one out, which is 7.333 innings. Feeding 7.1 straight into a decimal calculation understates the workload and inflates BB/9 by roughly three percent. This tool takes whole innings and extra outs separately so that mistake cannot happen.

How far apart the leagues sit

Aggregating every team's full 2025 regular season gives league average BB/9 of 3.21 in MLB, 2.67 in NPB and 3.61 in KBO. The spread from lowest to highest is 35 percent. Any single fixed scale therefore mislabels somebody: a scale built around MLB marks the entire KBO league average as a problem. That is why the reference league is a choice here rather than an assumption.

How the bands were drawn

Rather than fixing absolute cutoffs, the verdict compares your value to the selected league average as a percentage. Averages move between seasons, so an absolute scale ages badly. The five bands below are the reading this tool applies, and no league issues them as official grades.

A worked example

Take a pitcher with 45 walks in 120 innings and one out, judged against MLB. Rounded exactly the way the screen rounds, the figures come out like this. Move the same line to NPB and the verdict drops a band.

  • Innings — 120 + 1/3 = 120.33
  • BB/9 — 45 x 9 / 120.33 = 3.37
  • Against the MLB average of 3.21 that is +0.16, or 105% — league average
  • 2.67 innings per walk, about 61 walks at 162 qualified innings
  • Two more walks than a league-average pace would have produced over the same innings
  • The same line is below average in NPB and better than average in KBO

What innings per walk adds

It is the same information inverted, and it answers a different question. A BB/9 of 3.37 means a walk arrives every 2.67 innings on average. That tells you how twitchy your sample is: when walks come every two or three innings, one outing moves the season number noticeably, so a twenty-inning sample should not be treated as a verdict.

  • Below 1.5 innings — a baserunner nearly every inning

When the qualified-innings projection helps

A reliever's 35 innings and a starter's 160 cannot be compared on raw walk totals. Projecting to qualified innings restates both at the same workload, which is exactly what you want when ranking pitchers who are used differently. Qualified innings equal the number of team games in the season.

Turning a target into a walk budget

A target expressed as a rate is useless in the dugout. Multiply the target BB/9 by qualified innings and divide by nine and you get the walks allowed for the whole season; subtract the walks already issued and you have a countable budget. That is the calculation behind the target line on screen.

  • A 3.00 target over 162 MLB innings allows 54 walks
  • Already at 45 leaves nine for the rest of the season
  • Past the allowance, rebuild the target for next season

What BB/9 alone will miss

The quickest route to a good walk rate is throwing down the middle, and that gets punished on contact. The reverse also happens: strikeout pitchers chase swings outside the zone and collect walks as a side effect. Command numbers only make sense beside outcome numbers.

  • K/9 — strikeouts per nine, the reward for attacking
  • K/BB — strikeouts divided by walks, command against stuff
  • WHIP — hits plus walks per inning, total traffic allowed
  • A low BB/9 with a high batting average against is a warning, not a strength

The input mistakes that show up most

When the output looks wrong, the cause is almost always on the way in. Copying the box score innings notation is by far the most common.

  • Typing 7.1 into the whole-innings field instead of using the outs field
  • Adding hit batters into the walk total, which breaks comparison to the averages
  • Leaving innings at zero, which leaves nothing to divide by
  • Comparing postseason lines against regular-season league averages

Where to pull the numbers from

Use the official record keepers rather than secondary aggregators. Each league publishes pitching lines with BB and IP on the same row, and the league averages used here were aggregated from exactly those sources.

Before you quote the number

A BB/9 quoted without context invites an argument. These four checks keep it defensible.

How is BB/9 calculated?

Multiply walks by nine and divide by innings pitched. Forty-five walks over 120 1/3 innings is 45 x 9 / 120.33, which comes to 3.37. The nine is there because starters and relievers throw wildly different workloads, and multiplying by nine puts everyone on the same "if he threw a full game" footing.

Why are innings split across two fields?

Baseball counts innings in outs. Seven innings and one out is 7 1/3 innings, or 7.333 as a decimal, but the box score writes it as 7.1. Type 7.1 into a decimal field and the arithmetic is wrong by about three percent. Splitting whole innings from extra outs removes that trap entirely.

Why do I have to pick a league? Is 3.50 good?

On its own it is unanswerable, because the baselines differ. Measured across the full 2025 regular season, league average BB/9 was 3.21 in MLB, 2.67 in NPB and 3.61 in KBO. A 3.50 is a shade better than average in KBO and 31 percent worse than average in NPB. The same number flips meaning, which is why the league comes first.

How were the verdict bands set?

They are ratios of the selected league average rather than fixed numbers. Under 70 percent of average is elite command, 70 to 90 is better than average, 90 to 110 is league average, 110 to 130 is below average, and above 130 needs work. Fixed absolute grades drift because the league average itself moves between seasons. These bands are this tool's reading, not an official grade.

What does "walks at qualified innings" mean?

It is the walk total you would finish with if your current pace held all the way to qualified innings. Qualified innings equal the number of team games: 162 in MLB, 143 in NPB and 144 in KBO. It is the cleanest way to line a 35-inning reliever up against a 160-inning starter.

How do I use the target BB/9 field?

Type the BB/9 you are aiming at and the tool converts it into a walk allowance for the full season, then subtracts the walks already issued. A 3.00 target over 162 MLB innings allows 54 walks in total, so a pitcher already at 45 has nine left for the rest of the year.

Do intentional walks and hit batters count?

Intentional walks are included; hit batters are not. The BB column in a box score already contains intentional walks, so enter it as it stands. If you want a command number that includes plunkings, add BB and HBP together, but do not compare that figure to the league averages here, because those were built from walks alone.

Does a low BB/9 mean a good pitcher?

It means steady command, which is not the same thing. The easiest way to stop walking hitters is to live in the middle of the zone, and that gets hit hard. High-strikeout pitchers often carry more walks because they throw more chase pitches. Read BB/9 next to K/9, K/BB and WHIP rather than on its own.

How many innings before the number means anything?

Around twenty innings, one bad outing moves it a long way. The innings-per-walk figure on screen tells you how sensitive your sample is: if a walk arrives every two or three innings, a single start swings the season line. Fifty innings is a sensible floor, and for a starter, half of qualified innings is better.
