Read a strikeout pace with K/9

K/9 shows how many strikeouts a pitcher records for every nine actual innings. It puts a strikeout total beside the workload that produced it.

This calculator converts baseball inning notation before dividing: .1 is one out and .2 is two outs. The on-screen bands are a guide, not universal thresholds; league, season, and role change the baseline.

The K/9 formula

K/9 = (strikeouts Γ— 9) Γ· actual innings pitched. The denominator is real innings from outs, not the printed baseball decimal.

.1 and .2 are not decimal fractions

180.1 means 180 and one-third innings, not 180.1 decimal innings. 180.2 means 180 and two-thirds; .3 and higher are not valid baseball inning notation.

Why convert innings first

Treating .1 as one-tenth makes the denominator too small and distorts the rate. One recorded out is one-third of an inning.

K/9 and K% answer different questions

K/9 is strikeout frequency per inning. K% accounts for batters faced by measuring the share who strike out; use both when workload and opportunity differ.

Starter and reliever context

Starters must maintain a rate through longer outings, while relievers can work shorter, more concentrated appearances. Equal K/9 values can carry different context.

Small-sample limits

One short appearance can move K/9 sharply. Read early-season or return-from-injury numbers beside the inning total.

  • Opposition and role are outside the formula.
  • Compare longer and recent samples separately.

Common input mistakes

Do not treat 180.1 as 180.1 decimal innings or enter 180.3. Zero innings cannot be used as a divisor.
