Read meters, feet, inches, and centimeters together

Meters and feet answer the same length question with different habits. Enter either side and the page updates the opposite unit plus inches, centimeters, and yards.

The basis is the international foot: 1 ft = 0.3048 m. Meters to feet divide by 0.3048; feet to meters multiply by 0.3048.

Use it in screen order

  • Start in the meter field when the source value is metric. The foot field and result cards update immediately.
  • Start in the foot field when the source value is imperial. The meter, centimeter, inch, and yard values are recalculated from the same basis.
  • For room dimensions, product specs, or height notes, keep the original unit next to the converted unit.

Worked examples

These examples keep both the source value and converted value visible, so the rounded number does not lose its context.

2.4 m entered2.4 ÷ 0.3048 = 7.8740 ft, about 94.488 in
6 ft entered6 × 0.3048 = 1.8288 m, 182.88 cm
180 cm checked1.8 m = 5.9055 ft, about 70.866 in

What each unit is for

  • m is the metric length unit used in drawings, sports records, products, and most public documents.
  • ft is common in US and UK style dimensions; 1 ft is 12 in.
  • cm and in help when the object is small enough that a whole-foot number is too rough.
  • yd is 3 ft, useful for fabric, fields, and distance descriptions.

Rounding and cautions

  • This page uses the international foot. Old survey documents may use a different survey-foot basis.
  • For drawings, fabrication, or delivery documents, do not shorten decimals unless the document tells you the required precision.
  • For conversation, 1 m ≈ 3.28 ft is fine; for records, keep the calculated value and source unit.

FAQ

How many feet are in 1 meter?

1 meter is about 3.28084 feet.

How many centimeters are in 1 foot?

1 foot is exactly 30.48 centimeters, or 12 inches.

Why show inches too?

Many foot-based dimensions are written with inches. Showing inches makes labels such as height, room size, and product depth easier to check.

Is this the survey foot?

No. This page uses the international foot. Check the source document separately if it mentions survey feet.

Can I use this in drawings?

Use it as a unit conversion aid, but keep the original unit and required rounding rule in the drawing notes.

Reference

NIST Handbook 44 Appendix C lists the international foot as exactly 0.3048 meter.
