Time calculation guide
What this time duration calculator does
Enter a start time and an end time to calculate the actual elapsed duration between them. You can subtract break minutes, and if the end time is earlier than the start time the tool can treat the range as crossing midnight.
How to use it
- Select the start time.
- Select the end time. If it is earlier than the start time, the next-day option turns on automatically.
- Enter lunch, rest, or break time in minutes if needed.
- Read the net duration, total minutes, and decimal-hour result in the result panel.
Calculation method
Basic formula
Net duration = end time - start time - break timeFor an overnight range, the calculator adds 24 hours to the end time before subtracting. For example, 22:30 to 06:15 the next day is first treated as 7 hours 45 minutes, then any break time is deducted.
Examples
Validation and reading the result
- Break time must be 0 minutes or more and cannot be greater than the gross duration.
- Decimal hours are useful when a timesheet or billing record needs a value such as 7.25 hours.
- The copy action copies the displayed net duration and detailed values together.
Notes
Before using it for official records
This calculator performs a simple time-difference calculation from the values you enter. For payroll, overtime, night work, or regulated break rules, also check the applicable workplace, contract, or legal standard.
