The Pythagorean win model estimates what winning percentage usually fits a team’s scoring and prevention profile. It is not a standings replacement; it is a comparison tool for asking whether results match the run or point differential.

The formula stays the same
Win% = scored^exponent ÷ (scored^exponent + allowed^exponent). The tool keeps baseball 1.83, basketball 13.91, American football 2.37, and custom exponent without changing the formula.

The exponent is an assumption
Different sports have different scoring environments and variance. The listed exponents are practical model choices, not constants that fit every league, era, or short tournament.

Using the baseball exponent 1.83 with 750 scored, 690 allowed, and 162 games gives about a 53.9% expected win rate and about 87.3 expected wins. If actual wins are 88, the season is roughly +0.7 wins above the estimate.

Reading the actual-win gap
A positive gap can reflect close-game results, schedule flow, roster timing, or ordinary variance. A negative gap can mean the scoring profile has not become wins at the same rate. The number is a prompt for review, not a diagnosis by itself.
Why point differential alone is not enough
A +50 differential in a low-scoring season and a +50 differential in a high-scoring season do not carry the same meaning. The model uses scored and allowed totals separately before turning them into a percentage.
Small-sample limits
Early seasons and short events move sharply after one lopsided game.
- A handful of games can exaggerate the estimate.
- Tournament samples can show large gaps from one result.
- Remaining schedule, injuries, and roster changes are not included.
What the model leaves out

When to use custom
Use custom only when you have a league-specific exponent or a scoring environment that differs from the preset sports. Higher exponents make scoring-ratio differences stronger; lower values pull results closer to 50%.
