Text File Generator: Create and Download a TXT File

Type or paste your text into the editor above, then click “Save as TXT” to download a text file. Use this text file generator for notes, lists, draft documents, or code snippets without installing an app or creating an account.

For example, paste meeting notes, correct the text, then download a TXT copy or copy it into another app. When editing several existing files, download the current contents before loading the next TXT file. Keep important notes as downloaded files even when the editor reports a successful auto-save.

How to create a text file

Enter or paste your text, check the contents, and click “Save as TXT”. The download gets a filename containing the date and time. TXT stores plain text rather than fonts, bold formatting, or images. Empty or whitespace-only content cannot be downloaded.

Import a TXT file

Click “Load” and choose a .txt file. Uppercase extensions such as .TXT are accepted too. The limit is 10 MiB (10,485,760 bytes), shown as 10MB in the tool. Loading a file replaces the text currently in the editor, so download any text you need first. This tool does not extract text from PDF or Word files.

Does saving overwrite the original file?

No. “Save as TXT” downloads a new file containing your edited text. The tool does not change or overwrite the file you imported. If you want to replace the original, check the download and manage the files on your device.

Can I rely on auto-save before closing the tab?

The tool attempts to save in your browser about one second after you stop typing. Saving can fail if browser storage is full or blocked. If a failure message appears, your current text remains in the editor: download it as TXT before leaving. Clearing site data or ending a private browsing session can also remove saved text. Download important work as a file.

Encoding and unreadable characters

Downloads use UTF-8 with a byte order mark (BOM), and retain text line breaks. Imported files are read as UTF-8. Text saved in another encoding may appear garbled; save the original as UTF-8 in a text editor, then import that version.

Copy, reset, and text counts

“Copy” copies the whole editor contents to the clipboard. “Reset” clears the editor after confirmation, and the empty contents are then eligible for auto-save. The word count counts groups separated by whitespace. The character count can differ from the number of visible characters, particularly for emoji.

Can I continue on another device?

Auto-saved text belongs to this site in the current browser. There is no account sync or automatic transfer to another device. On a shared device, download the file you need and clear the editor after use. To continue elsewhere, transfer and import your TXT file.

Frequently asked questions

Is this text file generator free?

Yes. You can type or paste text and download it as TXT without an account or payment.

Can it convert Word or PDF files to TXT?

No. File import accepts TXT only. You can paste plain text copied from another document into the editor.

Will a 10 MiB file be auto-saved?

Not necessarily. The import limit and browser storage capacity are separate. A file can load successfully but fail to auto-save, so download a copy.

Does Save as TXT replace the original file?

No. It downloads your edited text as a new file and does not directly modify the imported original.

Are Unicode text and line breaks preserved?

The download stores text and line breaks as UTF-8 with BOM. How characters appear also depends on the encoding settings of the app opening the file.

What should I do if imported text looks garbled?

The tool reads imported files as UTF-8. Save the original as UTF-8 in a text editor, then load that version.

Can I undo Reset?

The tool has no undo-reset button. Confirming Reset clears the editor, and the empty contents are then eligible for auto-save. Download anything you need first.

Can a TXT file include fonts or images?

No. TXT is plain text. Font styles, colors, bold formatting, images, and document layout are not saved.
