World Clock & Time Zone Monitor

The monitor shows the current time, date and time difference for the cities you pick, based on your device's time zone and updated every second. On October 14, 2026, Tokyo is 13 hours ahead of New York, and from November 1, when US daylight time ends, it is 14. The day and night map shows where the sun has set, and the time slider shows what time it is elsewhere when it is 9:00 PM in New York.

A city's current time is UTC plus its offset, and the difference between two cities is the difference between their offsets

New York is on Eastern Time, which is UTC−5 in winter (EST) and UTC−4 in summer (EDT). On October 14, 2026, when it is 9:00 AM in New York, it is 2:00 PM in London, 6:30 PM in Delhi and Mumbai, 10:00 PM in Tokyo and 12:00 AM on October 15 in Sydney. On November 1, when US daylight time ends, Tokyo goes from 13 hours ahead of New York to 14 hours ahead without changing its own clocks.

The monitor above works from your device's time zone and shows the current time, date and time difference for the cities you choose, updated every second. Each card also shows whether daylight saving time is in effect, when the difference next changes, and whether it is business hours or sleeping hours there. The day and night map shows where the sun has set and where it is directly overhead.

Why to check the time difference instead of memorizing it

A time difference looks like a number you only need to learn once, but it changes for three reasons.

      • Daylight saving time: The US moves its clocks on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November. The UK and the EU move theirs on the last Sunday of March and October. Southeastern Australia and New Zealand shift in the opposite season, and Arizona and Hawaii do not shift at all. So the New York–London difference is 5 hours most of the year but 4 hours for about a week in autumn (October 25 to November 1, 2026) and about two weeks in spring (March 14 to 28, 2027).
      • The date: 9:00 AM on a Wednesday in New York is 10:00 PM that Wednesday in Tokyo and 12:00 AM on Thursday in Sydney. If you go by the clock alone, it may already be tomorrow, or the weekend, for the other person.
      • Rule changes: Most of British Columbia moved its clocks forward on March 8, 2026 and does not plan to turn them back, so Vancouver stays on UTC−7 all year. Mexico City stopped changing its clocks after October 30, 2022 and stays on UTC−6.

That is why it is safer to look at the current time and the difference together before you call family or a business abroad, convert a meeting, flight or match time to your own time, or check a recurring schedule in the weeks when different countries change their clocks.

      How the numbers are calculated

      1. Current time in a city: Each city is linked to an IANA time zone (New York is America/New_York, London is Europe/London, and so on). The monitor looks up that zone's UTC offset for this moment in your browser's time zone data and adds it to UTC. The starting point is your device's clock.
      2. Time difference: The other city's offset minus the base city's offset. With New York (UTC−4) as the base, Tokyo (UTC+9) is +13 hours. Zones on half-hour or 45-minute offsets, such as India (UTC+5:30), are calculated the same way.
      3. Daylight saving test: The smallest offset a city uses from now until about a year ahead is treated as its standard time. If the current offset is larger, the excess is shown as daylight saving time.
      4. Next change: The monitor finds every clock change in the next year for both cities and shows the first moment the difference becomes different, in the base city's time.
      5. Time-zone status: Local time from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM counts as business hours, 7:00 to 9:00 AM and 6:00 to 10:00 PM as morning and evening, and 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM as sleeping hours. Days of the week and public holidays are not considered.
      6. Day and night: The point where the sun is directly overhead comes from the formulas in the NOAA Solar Calculator (Meeus's astronomical algorithms), and everywhere the sun's elevation is below 0° is shaded on the map. The clock faces on the city cards separate day from night at an elevation of −0.833°, the value NOAA uses for sunrise and sunset.

US daylight time Federal law (15 U.S.C. § 260a) sets daylight saving time from 2:00 a.m. on the second Sunday of March to 2:00 a.m. on the first Sunday of November, which in 2026 runs from March 8 to November 1. A state that lies entirely within one time zone may exempt itself by law: Arizona (except the Navajo Nation) and Hawaii do not observe daylight saving time. New York is UTC−5 on standard time and UTC−4 on daylight time.

Most of the shifts in this table come from New York's own change. When US daylight time ends on November 1, every city whose clocks stay put shifts by an hour relative to New York: Tokyo, Singapore, Dubai, Delhi, Sydney, Auckland and São Paulo move one hour further ahead, and Phoenix, Honolulu, Mexico City and Vancouver, which are behind New York, close the gap by an hour. London and Paris show the same difference on both dates but not in between: from October 25 to November 1 Europe is already back on winter time and the US is not, so the gap is 4 hours for London and 5 for Paris. Vancouver has stayed on UTC−7 since March 8, 2026, so on December 2 it is an hour ahead of Los Angeles. Sydney and Auckland are in southern-hemisphere summer time now, which ends on April 4, 2027.

Among inhabited regions, the two with the largest time difference are the Line Islands of Kiribati (UTC+14) and American Samoa and Niue (UTC−11), which are 25 hours apart at the same moment. That means that for one hour every day, between 10:00 and 11:00 UTC, there are three calendar dates on Earth at once (for example October 13, 14 and 15). Compared with New York, they are 18 hours ahead and 7 hours behind on October 14, and 19 hours ahead and 6 hours behind from November 1, when New York is on standard time.

Only major regions are listed. Each row shows the local clock change, the New York time at that moment, and the difference before and after (the city minus New York). The next-change line on each card is calculated the same way.

For the week from October 25 to November 1, 2026, Europe has already set its clocks back while the US has not, so London is 4 hours ahead of New York instead of the usual 5. The same gap opens in 2027 between March 14, when the US springs forward, and March 28, when the UK and the EU follow. A call that involves New York, London and another city in those weeks is easy to get wrong by an hour, so check the date on the card's next-change line. To pick a meeting time for people in several countries, the World Meeting Time Calculator is easier.

How to read the world time zone map: day and night

The map is an equirectangular projection, with longitude running left to right and latitude top to bottom, covering 80° N to 60° S. The shaded area is where the sun's elevation is below 0°, and the yellow circle is the subsolar point, where the sun is directly overhead. Because the Earth rotates, that point moves west by 15° of longitude every hour, and moving the time slider shifts the shaded area with it.

2026New York timeLatitude of the subsolar pointWhat the map shows
March equinoxMar 20, 10:46 AM EDT0°The line between day and night runs straight from north to south
June solsticeJun 21, 4:24 AM EDT23.4° NAreas north of the Arctic Circle (66.6° N) have daylight all day

December solsticeDec 21, 3:50 PM EST23.4° SAreas north of the Arctic Circle are dark all day

The number of cities in daylight at the same New York noon also depends on the season. Of the 93 cities in the list, 50 are in daylight at noon in New York on June 21, 2026, but only 25 on December 21. New York noon is 16:00 UTC in June and 17:00 UTC in December, and the long northern summer days keep London, Paris and Moscow in daylight in the afternoon, while in December the sun has already set across most of Europe (Lisbon and the Canary Islands still have daylight).

      Common mistakes

      • Mixing up EST and EDT: Eastern Standard Time (EST) is UTC−5 and Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) is UTC−4. Writing "3:00 PM EST" for a July meeting can be read as a time an hour off. Writing the city name, or ET for both, is safer.
      • Missing the date: A 9:00 AM Wednesday call in New York is already 10:00 PM Wednesday in Tokyo and 12:00 AM Thursday in Sydney. When a card shows Yesterday or Tomorrow, the other city's date is different.
      • Counting only whole hours: India is 9 hours 30 minutes ahead of New York today and 10 hours 30 minutes ahead after November 1. Nepal (Kathmandu) is UTC+5:45, Iran (Tehran) is UTC+3:30, and Newfoundland is UTC−3:30 (UTC−2:30 in summer).
      • Assuming a country still changes its clocks: Mexico City last changed its clocks on October 30, 2022, Iran in September 2022 and Brazil in February 2019. Mexico City is now UTC−6 all year, so it is 2 hours behind New York today and 1 hour behind after November 1. Older devices and programs may not reflect these changes.
      • Assuming the whole US changes its clocks: Arizona (except the Navajo Nation) and Hawaii do not. Phoenix is UTC−7 all year, 3 hours behind New York in summer and 2 hours behind in winter.
      • Using the old rule for western Canada: Vancouver has stayed on UTC−7 since March 8, 2026. A device with outdated time zone data may show Vancouver an hour earlier from November 1, whereas this monitor calculates with the new rule.

      Limits and cautions

      • The current time is based on your device's clock. If the clock is wrong, every city is wrong by the same amount, so keep automatic time setting turned on in your operating system.
      • Time zone calculations use the IANA data built into your browser. The 2026 changes in British Columbia, Alberta and Morocco are adjusted separately. A rule that changes after this page was written may take a while to show up.
      • Business hours, morning and evening, and sleeping hours are based only on local time. Weekends, public holidays and lunch breaks are not considered, and they differ by country, so check the day of the week on the card as well.
      • Countries with several time zones (the US, Canada, Australia, Russia, Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico and others) need a city to be chosen to get the local time. For a city not in the list, pick one in the same time zone or search by UTC offset.
      • The map is a simplified drawing of Natural Earth 1:110m land outlines, so small islands are not visible. The shaded area is drawn at a solar elevation of 0°, so twilight before sunrise and after sunset appears only as a soft edge.

As of October 14, 2026. The differences and change dates in the tables match the IANA time zone data (tzdata 2026d), and the monitor recalculates from the moment you open the page.

      Frequently asked questions

What is the time difference between New York and London, Tokyo and Sydney right now?

On October 14, 2026, London is 5 hours ahead of New York, Tokyo is 13 hours ahead and Sydney is 15 hours ahead. From October 25 to November 1 London is only 4 hours ahead, because Europe sets its clocks back a week before the US. From November 1, when US daylight time ends, the differences become 5, 14 and 16 hours.

How can I tell whether daylight saving time is in effect?

A city card that shows DST +1 hour means that city is on daylight saving time now. The monitor treats the smallest offset the city uses from now until about a year ahead as its standard time, and flags any larger current offset as daylight saving time. The next-change line on the card also shows the date the difference changes again.

What does Next change on a card mean?

It is the next moment the time difference between the base city and that city changes, written in the base city's time. For example, with New York as the base, the London card shows that the difference becomes +4 hours from Saturday, October 24 at 9:00 PM, because London sets its clocks back that night. If nothing changes within a year, the card says so.

How are business hours, morning and evening, and sleeping hours decided?

They use the other city's local time: 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM is business hours, 7:00 to 9:00 AM and 6:00 to 10:00 PM is morning and evening, and 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM is sleeping hours. Days of the week and public holidays are not considered, so on weekends or local holidays check the day shown on the card as well.

What is the shaded area on the map?

It is where the sun has set. The monitor works out the point where the sun is directly overhead (the subsolar point) with NOAA's solar position formulas and shades everywhere the sun's elevation is below 0°. The round yellow marker shows that point. On October 14, 2026 it is at about 8° S, and as the northern hemisphere heads into winter it moves further south, so nights get longer in the north.

How can I see what time it is elsewhere when it is 9:00 PM in New York?

Use the Shift the time slider and every card and the map show the time up to 24 hours ahead or back, in 15-minute steps. The base city's date and time appear under the slider, so set it to 9:00 PM and read the cards. The Back to now button returns to the current time.

What if my city is not in the list?

Choose another city in the same country or the same time zone. Searching for an offset such as UTC+7 lists every city currently using that offset. Even if your device is set to a time zone that is not in the list, the base time is calculated for that time zone.

Are the cities I pick saved?

They are not stored on this device. When you change cities, the address bar holds the base city and your city list, so use Copy link to save or bookmark the link and it will open the same view later.
