Reading biorhythm compatibility — and where the theory stops

Biorhythm compatibility falls out of the gap between two birth dates. If three sine waves start at birth — 23 days physical, 28 emotional, 33 intellectual — then two people's curves stay offset by that same birthday gap for life. Turning that offset into a percentage is what this page calls phase compatibility.

One more figure gets mixed in constantly: the sync score, which measures how close the two rhythm values sit on a single chosen day. It moves every day, so treating it as compatibility means your conclusion flips overnight. What follows covers how the two differ, how to read the day offsets, and how far the theory can actually be trusted.

Compatibility and sync are not the same number

Phase compatibility is fixed by the birthday gap and ignores the target date entirely. Sync is the difference between the two rhythm values on one day, so it changes constantly. A pair at 0% emotional compatibility still reaches 100% sync on days when both curves cross zero together. That is why this tool keeps the two apart.

How the phase figure is built

Find the number of days between the two birth dates and divide by each cycle length. The remainder is the offset, and if it exceeds half the cycle the shorter route is from the other side, so subtract it from the cycle. Divide the offset by half the cycle and take the result off 100%.

  • Maximum offsets are 11.5 physical, 14 emotional, 16.5 intellectual days

A worked example

The example button loads 15 March 1995 and 22 July 1992. Here is that pair worked through with the same rounding the screen uses. The three cycles land on completely different answers, which is the point.

  • Gap between birth dates — 966 days
  • Physical, 23 days — 966 ÷ 23 = 42 remainder 0 → 0 days offset → 100%
  • Emotional, 28 days — 966 ÷ 28 = 34 remainder 14 → 14 days, exactly half a cycle → 0%
  • Intellectual, 33 days — 966 ÷ 33 = 29 remainder 9 → 9 days offset → 45%
  • Overall = (100 + 0 + 45.45) ÷ 3 = 48%, which lands in "mostly out of step"

What sync does for that same pair

Take the pair above with 2 September 2026 as the target date and the sync score reads 77% — almost 30 points away from their 48% phase compatibility. Scan the following 60 days and 30 September peaks at 94% while 7 October bottoms out at 41%. Nothing about the two people changed; only where the three curves happen to stand.

Reading the day offsets

The offset in days is often easier to work with than the percentage. An emotional offset of 14 days means the day one person peaks is the day the other bottoms out. An offset of zero means both rise and fall on the same days, which makes each other's state easy to anticipate.

  • Half the cycle — peaks line up with troughs
  • Offsets are always whole days, never fractions

Where 23, 28 and 33 came from

The numbers trace back to claims by Wilhelm Fliess and his circle around 1900. They came from the numerology of that era rather than from observed data. Modern chronobiology, which studies the roughly 24-hour circadian cycle, is a separate lineage, and no physiological account has ever been offered for why these three lengths in particular.

  • All three lengths are coprime, so the full pattern repeats only every 21,252 days — about 58 years
  • Variants adding a fourth or fifth cycle exist and rest on the same absence of evidence
  • This tool covers only the standard three-cycle version

The sync curve and the 60-day scan

The curve below covers 15 days either side of the target date. The vertical dashed line is the target date itself and the horizontal one marks 50%. The green and amber dots are the highest and lowest sync days found within 60 days of the target; when either lands outside the visible window it appears in the metric beside the chart instead.

The evidence runs against the theory

Terrence Hines gathered the published tests of biorhythm theory in a 1998 review and concluded there is no predictive power. A 1991 Dutch study checking lunar phase and biorhythms against trauma admissions found nothing significant either. Compatibility is built on the same foundation, so it inherits the same problem.

  • No reproducible link between rhythm phase and accidents, surgery outcomes or sporting results
  • The "critical day" claim has never held up under controlled testing
  • A compatibility score is a restated birthday gap, not a measure of a relationship

Common input mistakes

When a result looks wrong it is almost always the input. Swapping the target date and a birth date is the usual culprit.

  • Putting a birth date in the target field, which forces 100% phase compatibility
  • Typing a two-digit year and landing on 1925 instead of 2025
  • Setting a target date before one of the birth dates, which leaves sync blank
  • Picking a high sync day and then quoting it as the compatibility figure

Where it belongs and where it does not

Deciding in advance how to treat the result saves a lot of confusion. This is a calculator, not a diagnostic.

What is the difference between compatibility and sync?

Phase compatibility comes purely from the gap between the two birth dates, so changing the target date never changes it. It describes a fixed relationship between two people. The sync score measures how close the two rhythm values sit on one particular day, so it rises and falls daily. Two people with 0% emotional compatibility still hit 100% sync on the days both curves cross the zero line together. Judging a pair on one day of sync gets reversed the next day.

How is phase compatibility calculated?

Take the number of days between the two birth dates and divide by each cycle length; the remainder is the offset. If the remainder is more than half the cycle, measuring from the other side is shorter, so it is subtracted from the cycle. That offset is then divided by half the cycle and taken off 100%. On the 23-day physical cycle, 0 days apart is 100% and 11.5 days apart is 0%.

How are the three cycles combined?

A plain average of the physical, emotional and intellectual figures, with no weighting. Some calculators give emotion a heavier share, but nothing in the theory justifies that split, so all three count equally here. Each figure is also shown separately so you can see which axis pulled the average down.

Where do the 30/50/70/90% bands come from?

They are this tool's stated reading, not an official grading. Beyond the idea that a small offset means overlapping curves and a half-cycle offset means opposites, the theory says nothing about where "good" starts. That is why the boundaries are printed under the tool rather than hidden in the code.

Why is there no name field?

Names play no part in the arithmetic. Biorhythms depend only on days elapsed since birth, so a name field would add a step without changing the result. The wording simply says "you" and "them".

Does an identical birth date mean 100%?

Yes. A gap of zero days leaves every cycle at zero offset, so all three figures read 100% and the curves overlap exactly. That is what the theory says; there is no evidence that people born on the same day actually get along better.

Are leap years and 29 February birthdays handled correctly?

Yes. Dates are compared as calendar days at UTC midnight, so leap years and month ends are exact. A 29 February birthday is counted by its real elapsed days rather than being shifted to 28 February in common years.

Can the target date be in the future?

Yes. The formula is a sine of elapsed days, so future dates work the same way. The result is still arithmetic rather than a forecast. If the target date falls before either birth date the elapsed count would be negative, so no sync score is produced for that day.

Should this feed real decisions about a relationship?

No. Controlled studies against accident records, surgical outcomes and sports results found no predictive power in the 23/28/33-day cycles. A compatibility figure is the gap between two birthdays expressed differently, not a measurement of how a relationship is going. Treat it as conversation material, not evidence.
