VAT Calculator
Check the rate on the left and enter any one net, VAT, or gross amount; the other two values and the calculation basis appear together on the right.
Enter or choose the applicable rate. The 20% and 5% presets are UK examples; for a US domestic purchase, verify the state or local sales-tax rate and terminology first.
The last amount you edit becomes the source and updates the other two values.

Read net, VAT, and gross without assuming one jurisdiction
Net is the amount before tax, VAT is the rate-based tax amount, and gross is what the buyer pays after VAT. Keeping all three visible makes it easier to check a foreign invoice or quote that starts from a different figure.
The English page requires an editable rate. Its 20% and 5% presets are labeled UK examples, while US domestic sales taxes vary by state and locality and are not selected for you.
Net, VAT, and gross answer different invoice questions
A $100.00 net line and a $120.00 gross line are not interchangeable when a 20% rate applies. The $20.00 difference is the VAT amount.
First identify which figure your invoice, quote, or marketplace report actually provides.
- Net: amount before VAT
- VAT: tax calculated at the applicable rate
- Gross: net plus VAT
Choose the jurisdiction before choosing a rate
There is no single rate that works for every English-speaking market. The tool therefore keeps the rate visible and editable instead of treating the Korean 10% source rate as universal.
For US domestic purchases, USAGov directs users to state and local agencies because sales-tax percentages and taxable items vary. The 20% and 5% presets are only UK VAT examples.
- Name the country or tax jurisdiction
- Verify the product or service classification
- Use the rate effective on the transaction date
Start with the rate and one known amount
Choose a labeled UK example rate only when it applies, or type the verified rate. Then edit one of the net, VAT, or gross fields.
Grouping appears as you type, and the last amount edited remains the source for the synchronized result.
- Confirm rate
- Enter one amount
- Read the basis line before copying
Removing 20% from a $120.00 gross price
$120.00 × 100 ÷ 120 gives $100.00 net. The remainder is $20.00 VAT, and the three displayed amounts reconcile to the original gross.
For a different rate, the denominator changes to 100 plus that rate.
- Net = gross × 100 ÷ (100 + rate)
- VAT = gross - net
- Net + VAT must equal gross
Adding VAT to a net price
At 20%, $100.00 net produces $20.00 VAT and $120.00 gross. The calculator rounds the VAT amount to the nearest cent.
Use the rate on the official schedule or source invoice, not a rate remembered from another jurisdiction.
- VAT = round(net × rate)
- Gross = net + VAT
- Check currency precision
Starting from VAT needs a known rate
$20.00 VAT at 20% implies $100.00 net. The same $20.00 tax amount would imply a different net at another rate, so the rate cannot be guessed.
Mixed-rate invoices should be separated by tax category before calculation.
- Verify rate first
- Net = VAT ÷ rate
- Split mixed-rate lines
Cent differences usually come from rounding scope
One system may round VAT on each line and add the rounded values; another may total the tax base first and round once. Discounts and currency conversion can add more differences.
This calculator applies one rate to one amount and shows a cent-precision check, not an invoice engine.
- Line-level rounding
- Invoice-level rounding
- Discount and currency-conversion order
VAT arithmetic is not a US sales-tax determination
US sales tax is commonly administered by states and municipalities, with rates and taxable categories that differ. Entering a percentage can reproduce the arithmetic but does not establish nexus, sourcing, or exemption.
For cross-border VAT, place-of-supply and registration rules also need the relevant authority.
- State and local agency guidance
- Seller registration or nexus
- Product and customer exemption status
No invoice or customer details are stored
The page does not ask for a tax ID, customer name, address, or account. Calculations stay in the current browser view.
Copy transfers the visible values and rate; store actual records in an approved accounting system.
- No sign-in
- No server-side invoice history
- Review clipboard destination
Before putting the numbers on an invoice
Confirm the jurisdiction, effective rate, currency, tax-exclusive or tax-inclusive basis, and rounding scope. Then reconcile net plus VAT to gross.
Filing, registration, exemptions, and invoice wording remain outside this calculator.
- Authority and effective date
- Rate and taxable category
- Rounding method
- Required invoice fields
VAT calculator questions
Does the United States have one VAT rate?
This page does not supply a US federal VAT rate. US purchases commonly involve state and local sales taxes with different rates and rules. Use a rate verified for the transaction and keep the terminology on the source document.
Why are 20% and 5% available as presets?
They are labeled UK standard and reduced-rate examples sourced from GOV.UK, not US defaults. Choose them only when they apply, or enter the rate shown by the relevant tax authority or invoice.
How do I remove VAT from a gross price?
At rate r%, calculate gross × 100 ÷ (100 + r). The calculator rounds the net amount down to cent precision and assigns the remainder to VAT.
Can I start with the VAT amount only?
Yes, if the applicable rate is known. The calculator divides the VAT amount by the rate to estimate net, then adds VAT for gross.
Can I enter cents and commas?
Yes. The English page accepts US-style grouping commas and a decimal point, such as 1,234.56, and shows results to two decimal places.
Why can an invoice differ by a cent?
Line-by-line versus invoice-level rounding, discounts, and the provider’s rounding method can create a difference. Follow the invoice and tax authority rules.
Does the tool save invoice amounts?
No. It has no account or server-side invoice storage. Copy moves only the displayed values and rate to your clipboard.
Can this determine whether VAT or sales tax is due?
No. It performs rate arithmetic only. Nexus, registration, exemptions, place of supply, product classification, filing, and invoice requirements need authoritative guidance.
