BABIP shows how often balls in play turned into hits
BABIP, short for batting average on balls in play, filters out home runs and strikeouts so you can look at the batted balls the defense actually had a chance to turn into outs. Use this page after you have a hitter’s H, AB, HR, K, and SF line from a box score or stat table.

Hits (H)
All hits are entered first, but home runs are removed later because they are not fielded balls in play.
At-bats (AB)
AB is the starting point for the denominator, before strikeouts and home runs are removed.
Home runs (HR)
HR leaves the park, so it counts in H but does not belong in the BABIP numerator or denominator.
Strikeouts (K) and sacrifice flies (SF)
K is removed because no ball was put in play. SF is added because it is a tracked ball-in-play out.
The formula keeps only playable contact in the numerator and denominator
The standard hitter BABIP formula is (H – HR) ÷ (AB – K – HR + SF). The numerator counts hits that came from balls in play. The denominator estimates how many balls in play were available to become hits or outs.

A .385 result can be earned by loud contact and speed, but it can also be inflated by a short sample. Pair it with hard-hit rate, line-drive rate, sprint speed, and the number of games before calling it sustainable.
A high or low BABIP is a signal to ask better follow-up questions
- Do not treat .300 as a universal pass/fail line; leagues, seasons, parks, and player profiles move the baseline.
- For hitters, compare BABIP with contact quality and speed. For pitchers, use pitcher-focused context separately.
- Small samples can swing quickly. A week of games is a prompt to investigate, not a final conclusion.
Frequently asked questions
Why are home runs removed if they are hits?
A home run is already a hit, but fielders never had a chance to turn it into an out. BABIP is about balls in play, so HR is removed from both the hit count and the opportunity count.
Is a BABIP above .300 always lucky?
No. A fast hitter or one who hits many line drives may run a higher BABIP for real skill reasons. The number still needs contact-quality and sample-size context.
Why does sacrifice fly get added to the denominator?
A sacrifice fly is a ball in play that creates an out but is not counted as an at-bat. Adding SF keeps that playable out in the opportunity count.
