Read liters, gallons, cups, and cubic meters as the same volume

A volume converter helps when the same amount of space or liquid is written in different units. Liters and milliliters are common for drinks, cooking, and household products, while cubic meters appear in tanks, rooms, shipping volume, and water-use records.

U.S. gallons, U.S. cups, fluid ounces, and imperial gallons look similar but do not use the same amount. This page first converts the input to cubic meters, then shows liters, milliliters, U.S. gallons, imperial gallons, cups, and other useful units from the same basis.

Use it in screen order

  • Enter the value first. The default 1 means one of the source unit currently selected.
  • Choose the source unit. Use L or mL for everyday containers, US cup or US fl oz for many U.S. recipes, US gallon for fuel or product data, and imperial gallon for U.K. references.
  • Use the category buttons to narrow the result cards to metric, U.S. liquid, imperial, traditional, or industrial units.
  • Copy the result with the unit included. Keeping the source value and converted value together makes rounding easier to audit later.

Example conversions

The familiar names hide different legal definitions, so the number and unit should stay together.

1 L → mL1 L = 1,000 mL = 0.001 m³
1 US gal → L1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L
1 imperial gal → L1 imperial gallon = 4.54609 L
180 mL → traditional units180 mL is 1 Korean hop and about 0.9978 Japanese go.

Where each unit appears

  • L and mL are the most common metric units for beverages, cooking, cosmetics, cleaners, and household containers.
  • m³ equals 1,000 L. It is useful for tanks, room volume, water service, freight, and large storage.
  • A U.S. liquid gallon is exactly 231 cubic inches, which is about 3.785411784 L.
  • An imperial gallon is exactly 4.54609 L, so it is larger than a U.S. gallon.
  • U.S. cup, tablespoon, and teaspoon are cooking measures. Cup values can vary by country or recipe, so check the original standard when precision matters.

Rounding and cautions

  • This tool converts volume, not mass. To convert to weight, the material density and temperature conditions are needed.
  • Cup measures vary. This screen uses the U.S. customary cup of 236.5882365 mL.
  • Traditional units can vary by era, region, and source. Use them as a reading aid unless the original document defines the exact value.
  • For medicine, laboratory work, manufacturing, or fuel transactions, use calibrated instruments and the governing document first.

FAQ

How many milliliters are in 1 liter?

1 liter is exactly 1,000 milliliters. 1 L = 0.001 m³, while 1 mL = 0.000001 m³.

How many liters are in 1 U.S. gallon?

1 U.S. liquid gallon is exactly 231 cubic inches, which equals about 3.785411784 liters.

Are imperial gallons and U.S. gallons the same?

No. 1 imperial gallon is exactly 4.54609 L, while 1 U.S. gallon is about 3.785411784 L.

What cup standard does this converter use?

The US cup here is 236.5882365 mL. Cooking cups in other countries can be 200 mL, 240 mL, 250 mL, or another recipe-specific value.

Can volume be converted directly to weight?

Not directly. One liter of water, oil, milk, or another liquid can have a different mass because density differs by material and temperature.

References used

The basis combines the SI relation 1 L = 0.001 m³, NIST Appendix C for inch and foot relationships, NIST Handbook 44 for the 231 cubic inch U.S. liquid gallon, and the exact imperial gallon value of 4.54609 L.
